Further modifications of the auxanographic method for identification of yeasts.

A modified auxanographic carbohydrate assimilation procedure for the identification of medically important yeasts is described. This method employs a heavy inoculum of unstarved yeasts, autoclaved yeast assimilation medium, pour plates of shallow depth, and commercially available carbohydrate-impregnated disks. The accuracy of this procedure was established in a comparison with the Wickerham br...

Molecular identification of basidiomycetous yeasts from soils in Iran

In the present study basidiomycetous yeast species were characterised from soil samples in different regions of Iran. Soil samples were collected from 5–15 cm depth, subsequently yeasts were isolated and purified. Yeast isolates were identified using D1/D2 domains of 26S rRNA and physiologic tests. The results of this study revealed a rich diversity amongst basidiomycetous yeast species in the ...

Evaluation and reliability of a simplified method for identification of food-borne yeasts.

A simplified identification key described by Deak and Beuchat (T. Deak and L. R. Beuchat, J. Food Prot. 50:243-264, 1987) and the computer method of Barnett et al. (J. A. Barnett, R. W. Payne, and D. Yarrow, Yeast Identification Program, 1985) were used to identify 12 reference strains and 382 yeasts isolated from cultured milk products. Because the simplified key failed to account for species ...

Biochemical identification of clinically important yeasts.

Four commercially available kits for the speciation of yeasts were tested against 50 clinical isolates that had been identified by conventional methods. On biochemical grounds alone, the four systems varied from 71% to 100% in their efficiency in identifying Candida albicans. Yeasts other than C. albicans were identified with an efficiency varying from 24% to 83%. Conclusions are drawn on the v...
